Transfer Lock and Auth Codes: Keep Your Domain Safe or Move It

What the transfer lock protects you from, how to get your domain's transfer (auth) code, and how to move a domain to another provider or to us.

A domain moves from one provider to another with two things: the domain must be unlocked, and the new provider needs its transfer code (also called auth code or EPP code). You control both on the domain's page.

  • Transfer lock on: nobody can move the domain away, not even with the code.
  • Transfer code: a secret code, shown only to you when you ask for it.
1

Keep the transfer lock on

On the domain's page, the Transfer security card shows the Transfer lock. Leave it on unless you are moving the domain away: it stops anyone from transferring it, even with the transfer code.

2

Get the transfer code

When you want to move the domain, click Show code in the Transfer security card. The code appears on the page, ready to copy.

Treat the code like a password: whoever has it can start a transfer once the domain is unlocked. We record that the code was shown, never the code itself.

3

Move the domain to another provider

Start the transfer at the new provider.

  1. Turn the Transfer lock off on the domain's page.
  2. At the new provider, start a transfer for the domain and enter the transfer code.
  3. Confirm the transfer email the registry may send to the domain owner's address.
  4. The transfer usually completes within a few days; the new provider tells you when it is done.

Most registries do not allow a transfer within 60 days of registering or transferring a domain.

4

Changed your mind? Lock it again

Turn the Transfer lock back on. A transfer that has not completed yet cannot go through while the domain is locked.

5

Transfer a domain to us

To move a domain you own elsewhere to NodexVPS, open Domains, then Transfer in your customer area.

  1. At your current provider, unlock the domain and get its transfer (auth) code.
  2. Make sure the owner's email address works: some registries send an approval email.
  3. Enter the domain and the code, and pay the transfer invoice. A transfer adds one year to the domain's expiry date.
