DNS and Nameservers: Point Your Domain at Your Server
Add DNS records for your website, email and verification, or hand the domain's DNS over to your own nameservers, all from your customer area.
Every domain you register with us comes with DNS hosting. You can keep the DNS with us and add your records in the customer area, or point the domain to nameservers you run elsewhere.
- With our DNS (the default): you add A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SPF, SRV, CAA, NS, TLSA and SSHFP records yourself.
- With your own nameservers: you enter 2 to 4 nameservers, and manage the records at that provider.
Open your domain
Sign in to your customer area and open Domains. Click the domain you want to set up: its page has a Nameservers & DNS card.
If the card says “NodexVPS DNS (default)”, your records are hosted with us and you manage them with Manage DNS records.
Point the domain at your server
To show your website on the domain, add A records that point to your server's IPv4 address (you find it on the server's page).
- Click Manage DNS records, then Add record.
- Type A, name @ (the domain itself), value your server's IPv4 address. Keep TTL at 3600.
- Add a second A record with the name www and the same address, so www.yourdomain.com works too.
- If your server has an IPv6 address, add AAAA records for @ and www the same way.
- Click Save DNS records.
Add email and verification records
Email services and tools like Google Search Console give you records to add. Copy them exactly as they are given.
- MX records send your email to your mail provider: enter the server name as the value and the priority they give (for example 10).
- TXT records prove you own the domain, and hold SPF, DKIM and DMARC settings for email.
- CNAME records point a subdomain, such as shop or mail, to another name.
A name can have either a CNAME or other records, not both. Use CNAME only for subdomains, never for @.
Use your own nameservers instead
If your DNS is hosted somewhere else (for example Cloudflare, or a control panel on your server), point the domain to its nameservers.
- On the domain's page, click Change nameservers.
- Enter the nameservers your DNS provider gives you: at least 2, at most 4.
- Click Save nameservers. From now on you manage the domain's records at that provider.
Records you added with us are not used while the domain points to other nameservers. To move the DNS back to us later, open a support ticket.
Wait for the change and check it
New and changed records are usually live within the TTL you set (an hour at 3600). A nameserver change can take up to 24–48 hours to reach every network.
- Check what the internet sees with the command below (on Windows: nslookup yourdomain.com).
- If the old address still shows, wait for the TTL to pass and try again.
